In Microsoft Windows XP, when you use a smart card to re-establish a remote access connection to a server that uses the Extensible Authentication Protocol (EAP)/Transport Layer Security (TLS) authentication method, if you type an incorrect personal identification number (PIN), or if you type nothing when you are prompted for the smart card PIN, you may successfully log on.
This problem may occur when both of the following conditions are true:
  1. You try to re-establish the remote access connection during the same Windows XP logon session.
  2. The Cryptographic Service Provider (CSP) for the smart card does not verify the PIN every time it receives the PIN.

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article.
