Freelancer 1.0: Multiplayer Account ID Is Not Found

When you click Multiplayer on the main menu of Microsoft Freelancer, you may receive a message that is similar to the following:
Your account ID is shown below. This ID is used to identify your characters on all of the servers on which you play Freelancer. You will need this ID if you ever have to re-install Freelancer. There is a shortcut on Freelancer's start menu that will display your ID for printing or copying. If you already have an account ID (perhaps because this is your first time to play after re-installing Freelancer), enter it below, replacing the ID that is there now. When finished, press the CREATE button. To cancel and return to the main menu, press the MAIN MENU button.
However, the text box that displays your account identification number may be empty. Also, if you start the Examine My Account ID tool, you may receive the following message:
Your account ID is <Not Found>.
Note To start the Examine My Account ID tool, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to All Programs.
  2. Point to Microsoft Games, point to Freelancer, and then click Examine My Account ID.
This issue may occur if you do not have the most recent updates for Freelancer.
To resolve this issue, install the Freelancer Update. To do so, follow these steps:
  1. Visit the following Microsoft Web site:
  2. Click Game Updates, and then click the link to start the download process.
