FIX: Unconditional Update May Not Hold Key Locks on New Key Values

This article has been archived. It is offered "as is" and will no longer be updated.

SYMPTOMS
When you perform an unconditional update, key locks may not be held on new key values if all the following conditions are true:
  • The table contains a unique clustered index.
  • The unique clustered index contains only a character column.
  • The database that contains the table is case-insensitive.
  • The UPDATE statement changes only the case of the key column.
Note Although the new key values are not locked, the previous key values are locked.
