Lsass access violation on Windows 2000 domain controllers from Ticket Granting Service checksum initialization failure

This article has been archived. It is offered "as is" and will no longer be updated.
The Lsass.exe system process may unexpectedly quit with an access violation -1073741819 status code on one or more Microsoft Windows 2000 domain controllers in your organization. The domain controllers may quit unexpectedly, and then restart every few minutes. After this error occurs, logons cannot occur.
The problem occurs because of a Kerberos Ticket Granting Service (TGS) checksum initialization failure that is handled incorrectly.
