When you try to repair, try to reinstall, or try to install an "on demand" feature in a Microsoft Office 2003 program, you may receive an error message that is similar to the following:
Office Source Engine error: Error 25090.

Office Setup encountered a problem with the Office Source Engine, system error: -2147024703
If you try to manually start the Office Source Engine, you may receive an error message that is similar to the following:
Could not start the Office Source Engine on Local Computer.
Error 193: 0xc1
Note The description for error 193 is ERROR_BAD_EXE_FORMAT.
This problem may occur if the Office Source Engine (the Ose.exe file) is damaged.
To resolve this problem, use one of the following methods.

Method 1: Copy the Ose.exe file from the Office 2003 CD-ROM

To copy the Ose.exe file from the Office 2003 CD-ROM, follow these steps:
  1. Determine where your Ose.exe file is located.

By default, the Ose.exe file is in the following location:
    path:\program files\common files\microsoft shared\source engine\
  2. Insert your Office 2003 CD in your CD-ROM drive.
  3. Right-click Start, and then click Explore.
  4. Use Microsoft Windows Explorer to locate the following folder on the Office 2003 CD-ROM:
  5. Right-click the Ose.exe file, and then click Copy.
  6. Locate the folder where your Ose.exe file is located, and then select the following folder:
    path:\program files\common files\microsoft shared\source engine
  7. Right-click the source engine folder, and then click Paste.
  8. If you are prompted to replace an existing file, click Yes.

Method 2: Remove and then reinstall Office 2003

To do this, follow these steps.

Note Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.
  1. Insert your Office 2003 CD in your CD-ROM drive.
  2. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
  3. Click Add or Remove Programs.
  4. In the Currently installed programs list, click your version of Office 2003, and then click Remove.
  5. Click Yes when you are prompted to confirm that you want to remove Office 2003.
  6. After Office 2003 is removed from your computer, click Add New Programs.
  7. Click CD or Floppy.
  8. In the Install Program From Floppy Disk or CD-ROM dialog box, make sure that your Office 2003 CD-ROM is in your CD-ROM drive, and then click Next.
  9. Click Finish, and then follow the prompts to complete the installation of Office 2003.
  10. Click OK when the Office 2003 Setup has completed.
  11. Remove your Office 2003 CD from your CD-ROM drive.
When you install Office 2003 from the Office 2003 CD or an image of the CD, Setup installs a system service that is named the Office Source Engine (the Ose.exe file) to copy the required installation files to the local computer. After it reads the Setup settings file, the Setup.exe file determines the drive on the local computer that has the most space, verifies that the user has administrative privileges, and then installs the Office Source Engine.
