You may not be able to use the Microsoft LDAP API over an SSL connection to connect to your LDAP server. You may receive an event that is similar to the following event in the event log:
Event Type: Error Event Source: Schannel Event ID: 36882 Description:The certificate received from the remote server was issued by anuntrusted certificate authority. Because of this, none of the datacontained in the certificate can be validated. The SSL connectionrequest has failed. The attached data contains the server certificate.
When you try to use the LDAP_OPT_SERVER_CERTIFICATE option to define your own server certificatevalidation routine, you still cannot establish the connection.
This problem occurs because the certificate that the Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) server sends is self-signed. When the Schannel.dll file tries to authenticate the certificate, it cannot find the certification authority (CA) certificate of the issuing CA in its Trusted Root Certification Authorities store. When you use an SSL connection, Schannel.dll tries to verify the certificate that is sent by the LDAP server even if you have used the LDAP_OPT_SERVER_CERTIFICATE option to define your own server certificatevalidation routine.

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. The English version of this hotfix has the file attributes (or later file attributes) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time tool in Control Panel.
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2.
