Error message and event ID 1003 after you restart your Windows Server 2003-based computer: "Serious system error has occurred"

Microsoft ended support for Windows Server 2003 on July 14, 2015. This change has affected your software updates and security options. Learn what this means for you and how to stay protected.

After you restart your Microsoft Windows Server 2003-based computer, you receive the following error message:
Serious system error has occurred.
Additionally, a memory dump file is generated. After the restart operation is completed, the following event is logged to the system event log:

Source System
Type Error
Description Error code 000000d1, parameter1 f94ec0da, parameter2 00000002, parameter3 00000000, parameter4 f94ec0da.

This issue occurs when the operating system calls an I/O completion function of the Nwlnkipx.sys system file that is mistakenly defined as being pageable.

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing.
