"The server returned an invalid or unrecognized response" error message in Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1

When you try to use Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 (SP1) to view a Web page, you may receive an error message that is similar to the following error message:
The server returned an invalid or unrecognized response.
This problem may occur if the following conditions are true:
- You have installed the cumulative security update for Internet Explorer MS04-004.
- You try to access a Web page that is secured by basic authentication.
Hotfix informationA supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.
If the hotfix is available for download, there is a "Hotfix download available" section at the top of this Knowledge Base article. If this section does not appear, submit a request to Microsoft Customer Service and Support to obtain the hotfix.
