When you connect your Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition infrared receiver after you install the critical update for the infrared receiver, you find that the remote control stops working. In Device Manager, the Microsoft eHome Infrared Transceiver device appears with an exclamation point in a yellow circle next to the listing for the device. The details report shows "Code 10."
This issue may occur if the following conditions occur in the order that they are listed:
You are using Windows XP Media Center Edition and you have a Media Center infrared receiver and remote control configured.
You disconnect the Media Center infrared receiver.

You reconnect the Media Center infrared receiver.
The problem does not occur if you leave the Media Center infrared receiver connected to the computer while you install the update or if you install the update before you configure the Media Center infrared receiver for the first time.

To work around this problem, uninstall the infrared receiver from Device Manager, and then restart the computer or scan for hardware changes. To do this, follow these steps:
In Control Panel, double-click System, and then click the Hardware tab.
Click Device Manager, and then click the infrared receiver. The device is typically listed as Microsoft eHome Infrared Transceiver, but the name may vary depending on your configuration.
On the Action menu, click Uninstall, and then click OK to uninstall the infrared receiver.
On the Action menu, click Scan for hardware changes to reinstall the infrared receiver.
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section of this article. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2.
