FIX: An access violation exception may occur when you update a text column by using a stored procedure in SQL Server 2000

This article has been archived. It is offered "as is" and will no longer be updated.

Microsoft distributes SQL Server 2000 fixes as one downloadable file. Because the fixes are cumulative, each new release contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous SQL Server 2000 fix release.
Symptoms
An access violation exception may occur, and you may receive the following error message:

ODBC: Msg 0, Level 19, State 1
SqlDumpExceptionHandler: Process 51 generated fatal exception c0000005
EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION. SQL Server is terminating this process.

This problem occurs when a table has an INSTEAD OF trigger defined on it, and you try to update a text column in the table by using a stored procedure.
