"No results found" error message when you search for content on a top-level Windows SharePoint Services Web site in SharePoint Portal Server 2003

Support for Office 2003 has ended

Microsoft ended support for Office 2003 on April 8, 2014. This change has affected your software updates and security options. Learn what this means for you and how to stay protected.

SYMPTOMS
When you search for content on a top-level Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services Web site that is stored in Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003, you receive an error message that is similar to the following:
No results found
You do not experience these symptoms if you search for content in the portal site. Additionally, if you use SQL Server Enterprise Manager to view the properties of the full-text catalog in the SiteName_SITE database in Microsoft SQL Server, you may find that no items are indexed. If you try to index the full-text catalog, you may receive an error message that is similar to the following:
Error 7605: Full-text catalog ‘ix_CatalogName_SITE’ has been lost. Use SPS_fulltext_catalog to rebuild and repopulate this full-text catalog.
CAUSE
This issue may occur if a problem with the full-text catalog in the SiteName_SITE database prevents indexes from being generated correctly.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, rebuild the full-text catalog. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Start SQL Server Enterprise Manager.
  2. Expand Databases, expand the SiteName_SITE database, and then click Full-Text Catalogs.
  3. In the right pane, right-click the full-text catalog, and then click Rebuild Catalog.
  4. When you are prompted to confirm that you want to rebuild the full-text catalog, click Yes.
  5. Quit SQL Server Enterprise Manager.
