FIX: You cannot encode and playback certain formats with the Windows Media ASF Filter

This article discusses two hotfixes to the Direct Show Windows Media Advanced Systems Format (ASF) Filter for the following symptoms:
  • When you try to play content with multiple audio streams or with multiple video streams, and that content is encrypted by using Windows Media Digital Rights Management (WMDRM) in an application, a problem may occur. The problem occurs when you use Windows Media ASF File Reader Filter. When you do this, you may receive the following error message when the file is loaded:
0x80070057 -- One or more arguments are invalid
This worked correctly before you applied Microsoft Knowledge Base article 823738.
  • When you try to encode 24-bit audio or multichannel audio in an application by using Windows Media ASF File Writer, you may receive the following error message when you try to connect the graph:
0x80040217 -- No combination of intermediate filters could be found to make the connection.
The problems that are described in the "Symptoms" section are caused by the following:
  • A regression was introduced by 823738.
  • The Windows Media ASF File Writer did not originally support the following:
    • Audio greater than 16 bits per sample
    • Multichannel audio
