The mouse may not track as smoothly after you enable the “Enhance pointer precision” feature in Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2

After you enable the Enhance pointer precision feature in Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2), you may find that the mouse does not track as smoothly as it did before you enabled this feature.

For example, you may notice the problem when you use the mouse to slowly draw a diagonal line toward the lower-right corner of the window in a drawing program such as Microsoft Paint (MSPaint.exe).
This problem may occur when you use the Microsoft Mouse driver in Windows XP SP2 with certain mouse or trackball devices.
To work around this problem, turn off the Enhance pointer precision feature:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type control mouse, and then click OK.
  2. Click the Pointer Options tab, click to clear the Enhance pointer precision check box, and then click OK.
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
More information
Enhanced pointer precision gives you more control over the pointer, especially when you move the pointer small distances on the screen. Enhanced pointer precision also provides for quicker deceleration of the pointer when you slow down or stop the mouse.
