FIX: You may receive a memory-related error message when you repeatedly create and destroy an out-of-process COM object within the same batch or stored procedure in SQL Server 2000

This article has been archived. It is offered "as is" and will no longer be updated.
Bug #: 473956 (SQL Server 8.0)
Microsoft distributes Microsoft SQL Server 2000 fixes as one downloadable file. Because the fixes are cumulative, each new release contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous SQL Server 2000 fix release.
SUMMARY
This article describes the following about this hotfix release:
  • The issues that are fixed by this hotfix package.
  • The prerequisites for installing the hotfix package.
  • Whether you must restart the computer after you install the hotfix package.
  • Whether the hotfix package is replaced by any other hotfix package.
  • Whether you must make any registry changes.
  • The files that are contained in the hotfix package.
SYMPTOMS
When you repeatedly create and destroy out-of-process Microsoft Component Object Model (COM) objects within the same batch or stored procedure in Microsoft SQL Server 2000, the memory used may grow continuously until the batch or the stored procedure has completed. The MemToLeave memory region may be exhausted when thousands of objects are created and destroyed within a single batch or a stored procedure. When the MemToLeave memory region is exhausted, you may receive any one of the following error messages:
Error:0x8007000e
HRESULT:-2147024882
Source :ODSOLE Extended Procedure
Description: Not enough storage is available to complete this operation.
WARNING: Failed to reserve contiguous memory of Size= 65536.
WARNING: Clearing procedure cache to free contiguous memory.
Error: 17802 Could not create server event thread.
SQL Server could not spawn process_loginread thread.
For a list of all publicly released SQL Server 2000 Post-Service Pack 3a hotfixes, see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
810185 SQL Server 2000 hotfix update for SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 3 and 3a
CAUSE
This problem occurs because the cached TypeInfo object may not be reused for an out-of-process COM object. The computer that is running SQL Server caches the TypeInfo object for COM objects that are created by using the sp_OACreate stored procedure. When the same object is instantiated again within the same batch or stored procedure, the cached TypeInfo object is reused. However, the cached TypeInfo object is not reused for out-of-process COM objects. This behavior causes the cache to grow every time that a new COM object is instantiated.
RESOLUTION
