Applications that use COM+ may not work correctly and Event ID 4230 is logged on a Windows 2000-based computer

SYMPTOMS
When you run an application that uses COM+ on a Microsoft Windows 2000-based computer, you may experience one or more of the following symptoms:
  • The application stops responding.
  • The application closes unexpectedly.
  • You receive application-specific errors.
Note You may experience other symptoms. The symptoms may vary depending on the different applications that you use.

In addition, an event that resembles the following is logged in the Application log:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: COM+
Event Category: TM
Event ID: 4230
Date: Date
Time: Time
User: N/A
Computer: Computer
Description:

hr == S_OK
Server Application ID: {Application_ID}
Server Application Name: Application_Name
The serious nature of this error has caused the process to terminate.
Error Code = 0x8000ffff : Catastrophic failure
COM+ Services Internals Information:
File: .\assoc.cpp, Line: 528.

CAUSE
This problem occurs because COM+ handles marshaling failures incorrectly.
RESOLUTION
