The Wininet.dll file does not handle redirection from an HTTPS URL to an HTTP URL in Microsoft Windows XP with Service Pack 2.
This problem occurs because of a security check in the Wininet.dll file. The security check prevents the Wininet.dll file from handling the redirection if the referrer header is not present in the request header.

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

After you install the hotfix, create the
registry key. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
  2. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\FeatureControl
  3. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click Key.
  5. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
  6. Type iexplore.exe, and then press ENTER.
  7. Right-click iexplore.exe, and then click Modify.
  8. Type 1 in the Value data box, and then click OK.
  9. Exit Registry Editor.
