When you install Microsoft Office 2003 Service Pack 2 (SP2), you receive the following error message:
The expected version of the product was not found on your system.
Additionally, you may experience the following behavior:
The Office 2003 Web Components are not updated as expected.
A message that is similar to the following message is logged in the log file:
MSI (s) (54:DC) [15:30:23:825]: Product: Microsoft Office 2003 Web Components -- Installation failed. MSI (s) (54:DC) [15:30:23:841]: MainEngineThread is returning 1642
The upgrade patch cannot be installed by the Windows Installer service because the program to be upgraded may be missing, or the upgrade patch may update a different version of the program. Verify that the program to be upgraded exists on your computer and that you have the correct upgrade patch.
This issue may occur if Microsoft Office 2003 Web Components version 2 or Microsoft Office 2003 Web Components version 3 is installed on the computer.
Office 2003 Web Components version 3 is included on the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 CD-ROM, and is also available on the following Microsoft Download Center Web site:
Install Office 2003 Web Components version 3 as described on the Microsoft Download Center.
When you experience the behavior that is mentioned in the "Symptoms" section, you may receive a message at the end of the Office 2003 SP2 installation that states that Office 2003 SP2 was not successfully installed. In this case, the Office 2003 Office Web Components were not successfully installed. However, the rest of Office 2003 SP2 was successfully installed. If you installed the Office XP Office Web Components from the Office 2003 CD-ROM, Office XP Web Components Service Pack 2 (SP2) will also be successfully installed when you install Office 2003 SP2.
