FIX: The IDE stops responding when you work with nested generic types in C# in Visual Studio 2005

When you work with nested generic types in C# in Microsoft Visual Studio 2005, the IDE stops responding. Additionally, the computer shows 100 percent CPU utilization.

This problem does not apply to all nested generic types. However, this problem occurs in the case where there is a generic base class that has a nested derived class that inherits from the base class where the type parameter is of type derived. For example, the following code causes the IDE to stop responding.
class Base<T>{	class Derived : Base<Derived> 	{	}}
You may experience this problem when you modify code because the IDE may parse the unfinished code as the previous code example. For example, when you add a method in this base class and type the opening brace, the IDE parses the code as the following code.
class Base<T>{	void Merge(T other)	{  			}	class Derived : Base<Derived> 	{	}

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Visual Studio 2005 service pack that contains this hotfix.

To work around this problem, use one of the following methods:
  • Type the base class after the derived class.
  • Declare each class in a separate file.
