Error message when you use the Distribute Software Updates Wizard in SMS 2003 Service Pack 2: "Unknown error 0x80071017"

You are using the Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003 Distribute Software Updates Wizard to authorize updates from a SMS 2003 Service Pack 2-based computer. However, when you download the updates, you receive the following error message:
Error downloading file File Name.exe: Unknown error 0x80071017
This problem occurs if the following conditions are true:
  • The SMS site server is running on a Microsoft Windows 2000 Server-based computer or on a Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server-based computer.
  • You are using the Distribute Software Updates Wizard to authorize updates for the SMS Inventory Tool for Hewlett-Packard (HP) Proliant and Integrity Updates.
When the Distribute Software Updates Wizard downloads updates for HP Proliant and Integrity Updates, the wizard tries to obtain the public key data from Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI). WMI returns a "0x80071017" error code (WBEM_INVALID_QUERY).

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing.
