Description of the SQL Server Runtime license

The SQL Server Runtime license is a license that lets an independent software vendor (ISV) embed the complete SQL Server code into a solution for use only by the ISV application. The customers of the ISV cannot use this SQL Server product to run other applications or to develop new applications, databases, or tables.

Note The SQL Server Runtime is supported on 32-bit and 64-bit operating systems.

How to obtain the SQL Server Runtime license

To obtain the SQL Server Runtime license, Microsoft partners who are interested in embedding Microsoft technology into their applications can enroll in the Microsoft ISV licensing program.

The ISV orders and receives one master copy of the product. The ISV keeps the master copy and uses the master copy to make additional copies. Then, the ISV distributes the additional copies to customers as part of a unified solution. The master copy is a regular CD of the product.

The SQL Server Runtime license ordering restrictions

The SQL Server Runtime license may only be ordered by ISVs who have Product Integration Agreements that became active after January 1, 1999. Additionally, orders for multiple end customers cannot be aggregated. Each end customer order must be placed separately so that the Open License reflects the end customer name and not the name of the ISV.
