Error message when you use the Advanced Find feature to look up Quick Campaign items in Microsoft Dynamics CRM 3.0: "The root element is missing"

Symptoms
When you use the Advanced Find feature to look up Quick Campaign items in Microsoft Dynamics CRM 3.0, you may receive the following error message:
Server Error

The root element is missing.
Additionally, you find the following error message in the Application log:

Resolution
