The pen service does not exclude certain HID digitizers on a Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005-based Tablet PC

On a Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005-based Tablet PC, you install the pen service (Wisptis.exe). The pen service does not exclude certain human interface device (HID) digitizers.

This behavior affects some custom digitizers that do not belong to the input devices for the pen service. These digitizers may become unavailable. Therefore, the pen service may prevent the custom application from using the custom devices.
In the current implementation of the Wisptis.exe process, the pen service assumes that any HID that has a top-level collection belongs to the pen service if the top-level collection specifies a usage page for the digitizer.

Note The top-level collection specifies that the usage page for the digitizer is 0x0d.
A hotfix is available to change this behavior. This hotfix updates the pen service. The new version of the pen service excludes all HID digitizers that do not have a usage page for the following elements:
  • Digitizer
  • Lightpen
  • Pen
  • TouchScreen
After you apply this hotfix, the pen service enables independent hardware vendors (IHVs) to exclude specific devices that have a usage page for Digitizer and for Pen. The devices can be excluded according to vendor IDs and according to product IDs.

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

The English version of this hotfix has the file attributes (or later file attributes) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time item in Control Panel.
