256986 Description of the Microsoft Windows registry
When you install a 2007 Microsoft Office suite on a computer that has an earlier version of Microsoft Office with FrontPage installed, FrontPage is not removed during the installation.
To work around this behavior for 2007 Office system products, remove the earlier version of Office. To do this, you can include this step as part of the installation process by modifying the Config.xml file in Notepad.
How to modify the Config.xml file
For more information about how to modify the Config.xml file, see the "Config.xml file in the 2007 Office system" topic in the 2007 Office Resource Kit. To do this, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
Note The path of the Msiexec.exe file must be provided.
In this example, the product GUID is the GUID for Microsoft Office 2000 Premium. To identify the product GUID for the version of Office that is installed, follow these steps.
Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall the operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.
Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
Expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, expand SOFTWARE, expand Microsoft, expand Windows, expand CurrentVersion, and then expand Uninstall.
In the list of GUID strings under Uninstall, examine the DisplayName entry for each string until you locate the correct string.
For retail installations, manually remove the previously installed Office product. To do this, follow these steps:
Click Start, click Run, type control panel, and then click OK.
In Control Panel, double-click Add or Remove Programs.
In the Currently installed programs list, select the previously installed Office product, and then click Remove.
Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
In Control Panel, under Programs, click Uninstall a program.
In the Uninstall or change a program list, right-click the previously installed Office program, and then click Uninstall.
Note When you start a 2007 Office program for the first time after you remove the earlier version of Microsoft Office, a Windows Installer dialog box may briefly appear. This occurs to make sure that registry keys or files that are needed by the 2007 Office system have been added.
This behavior occurs because the 2007 Office suites do not include Microsoft FrontPage as one of the programs to be installed. Similarly, other Office programs may also not be removed if the 2007 Office suite installation does not include a previously installed pre-2007 Office program. Some other shared Office components may also not be removed, such as the Office Shortcut Bar. The Office Shortcut Bar is installed in versions of Office earlier than Office 2003.
