You create a compiled database (.mde) file in the Access 2002-2003 database format in Microsoft Office Access 2007. When you use Microsoft Office Access 2003 to try to open the .mde file, you receive the following error message:
This database is in an unrecognized format.
The database may have been created with a later version of Microsoft Office Access than the one you are using. Upgrade your version of Microsoft Office Access to the current one, then open this database.
When you save a database as an .mde file, the .mde file compiles all modules, removes all editable source code, and then compacts the destination database. Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) code will continue to run. However, the VBA code cannot be viewed or edited. Because of the changes that Access 2007 makes to a database when the database is saved an .mde file, .mde files cannot be converted to a file format from an earlier version of Microsoft Access.
Steps to reproduce the behavior
