When you browse a Microsoft ASP.NET Web application in Microsoft Internet Explorer 6, you click the Back button. However, Internet Explorer does not display the previous Web page. Instead, Internet Explorer incorrectly continues to display the current page. This problem occurs if the following conditions are true:
You are running Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2).
The GZIP compression method is enabled on the Web server that hosts the ASP.NET Web application.
The ASP.NET Web application performs a Postback request.
This problem occurs because Internet Explorer appends an internal cookie to the cache entry of the ASP.NET Web application if a Postback request occurs. Additionally, the internal cookie is used to find the previous page. If the GZIP compression method is enabled, a new cache entry is appended without the internal cookie. Therefore, the previous page cannot be found within the cache when you click the Back button.
A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

You must have Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) installed to apply this hotfix.
You must restart the computer after you apply this hotfix.
Hotfix replacement information
This hotfix does not replace any other hotfixes that are applied on the computer.

After you apply the hotfix, you must modify registry settings to enable the hotfix. You can modify the registry settings for a specific user or for all users.
Registry settings for a specific user
Use one of the following methods to enable the hotfix for a specific user.
Follow these steps:
Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
Locate and then click the following key in the registry:
On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click Key.
Type FEATURE_URLMON_POST_DECOMPRESSION_CACHE_COOKIE_KB928491, and then press ENTER.
On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
Type *, and then press ENTER.
On the Edit menu, click Modify.
Type 1, and then click OK.
On the File menu, click Exit.
The English version of this hotfix has the file attributes (or later file attributes) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time item in Control Panel.
To work around this problem, install Microsoft Internet Explorer 7.
