You install or uninstall the original release version of Microsoft SQL Server 2005 or SQL Server 2005 with Service Pack 2 (SP2) or later version on a Windows Vista-based or Windows Server 2008-based computer. After you do this, you receive an error message that resembles the following in the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Setup dialog box:
The following applications should be closed before continuing the install: SQL Server Agent (MSSQLSERVER) (Process Id:3956)
When you click Ignore in the dialog box, the installation is completed successfully.
If you use SQL Server 2005 Express Edition, SQL Server Agent may not be installed. In that case, the dialog shows "SQL Server" instead of "SQL Server Agent".
This issue occurs because of an enhanced file detection feature in Windows Vista and in Windows Server 2008. The enhanced file detection feature is known as Restart Manager. Restart Manager is used together with Microsoft Windows Installer version 4.0.
To resolve this issue, you can safely click Ignore in the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Setup dialog box to continue the operation.
This behavior is by design.
This problem does not occur if one of the following conditions is true:
You use the /quiet switch for the SQL Server 2005 installation.
You use the /qn switch for the SQL Server 2005 SP2 or later versions installation.
