A Windows XP-based client computer uses an archived certificate for network authentication after a new certificate is auto-enrolled in a wireless Active Directory domain

Support for Windows XP has ended

Microsoft ended support for Windows XP on April 8, 2014. This change has affected your software updates and security options. Learn what this means for you and how to stay protected.

Consider the following scenario:
  • In a wireless Active Directory domain, you use the Extensible Authentication Protocol-Transport Layer Security (EAP-TLS) authentication method to communicate with the authenticating server.
  • You issue user certificates to client computers in the domain.
  • You enable the "Enroll certificates automatically" Group Policy setting on a Windows XP-based client computer in the domain.
When a user certificate is renewed or when a user certificate expires in this scenario, the Windows XP-based client computer receives a new user certificate. Additionally, the previous user certificate is marked as "Archived." However, during later attempts to connect to an access point, the Windows XP-based client computer does not pass network authentication because of a certificate error.

If you capture a network monitor trace when this issue occurs, you discover that the client computer uses the archived certificate for network authentication instead of a new user certificate.

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft. However, it is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Windows XP service pack that contains this hotfix.

To work around this issue, manually delete the archived certificate from the client computer.
