SQL Server Setup fails unexpectedly when you try to install SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2
When you try to install Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2 (SP2), SQL Server Setup fails unexpectedly. Additionally, when you examine the Summary.txt file, you find the following information:
Product Installation Status
Product : Setup Support Files Product Version (Previous): 3042 Product Version (Final) : Status : Failure Log File : C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup Bootstrap\LOG\Hotfix\Redist9_Hotfix_KB921896_SqlSupport.msi.log Error Number : 1622 Error Description : Unable to install Windows Installer MSI file Note
The information in the Summary.txt file is not useful to diagnose the cause of this problem.
This problem occurs because the following folder that is used by the Setup program does not exist:
%PROGRAMFILES%\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup Bootstrap\LOG\Hotfix
This folder should have been created when you installed the original release version of SQL Server 2005. However, the folder may have been deleted or renamed before you install SQL Server 2005 SP2.
To resolve this issue, re-create the %PROGRAMFILES%\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup Bootstrap\LOG\Hotfix folder, and then reinstall SQL Server 2005 SP2.
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
