After you install updates on a computer that is running Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 (SP4), the computer may stop responding during the shutdown process

Symptoms
Consider the following scenario. You have a computer that is running Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 (SP4). You use the Windows Update (WU) agent to install updates on this computer from one of the following sources:
  • Microsoft Windows Server Update Services (WSUS)
  • Windows Update
  • Microsoft Update
In this scenario, the computer may stop responding when the Windows Update agent tries to shut down the computer after the updates are installed.

Note The Windows Update agent is also known as the Automatic Updates (AU) service.
Resolution
To resolve this problem, download the latest version of the Windows Update agent by clicking one of the following links as appropriate for the computer's operating system.

x86-based versions of Windows

DownloadDownload the WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe package now.

x64-based versions of Windows

DownloadDownload the WindowsUpdateAgent30-x64.exe package now.

Itanium-based versions of Windows

DownloadDownload the WindowsUpdateAgent30-ia64.exe package now.
If you are using the latest version of WSUS, the latest Windows Update agent is included in the self-update tree on the WSUS server. Client computers will receive the latest Windows Update agent when they connect to the WSUS server.
