On a Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2)-based computer, a small memory leak occurs in Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 when you call the Speech API (SAPI) SpeakStream method.

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

Enable the hotfix

To enable this hotfix, you must modify a registry subkey. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
  2. Locate and then click one of the following registry subkeys:
    • HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\FeatureControl
    • HCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\FeatureControl
  3. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click Key.
  4. Type FEATURE_DONT_ALLOCATE_STATSTG_NAME_KB936554, and then press ENTER.
  5. Right-click FEATURE_DONT_ALLOCATE_STATSTG_NAME_KB936554, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
  6. Type appname.exe, and then press ENTER.

    Note The appname placeholder in step 6 represents the application that calls the SAPI SpeakStream method.
  7. In the details pane, right-click appname.exe, click Modify, type 1in the Value data box, and then click OK.
  8. Exit Registry Editor.
