Expression Media cannot open Expression Media Notepad (.ivn) files

When you use Microsoft Expression Media to try to open an Expression Media Notepad (.ivn) file, you experience the following symptoms:
  • A delay occurs before the Expression Media Notepad window appears.
  • The image preview is missing from the Expression Media Notepad window.
  • The comments are missing notes in the Expression Media Notepad window.
Typically, this behavior occurs when the computer that is running Expression Media is behind a Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration (ISA) firewall. In this case, the ISA server may block the document-type definition for the .ivn files.
To resolve this behavior, install the ISA client on the computer that is running Expression Media.

Steps to reproduce the behavior

  1. In Expression Media, click Window, and then click Expression Media Notepad.
  2. Drag a picture from the Expression Media details pane to the Expression Media Notepad window.
  3. In the Expression Media Notepad window, under Comments, type Test.
  4. Click File, click Save to save the catalog, and then exit Expression Media.
  5. Double-click the .ivn file that was created.
