In Windows Vista, a red "X" appears in the icon for a mapped network drive in Folders area of Windows Explorer. However, in the details pane, a green pipe appears in the icon for the same drive. Because you can successfully access the network drive, you expect the icon to appear as a green pipe in both areas.
This problem may occur if the following conditions are true:
The network drive is mapped by using user credentials that differ from the credentials that were used to log on to Windows Vista.
You do not select the Remember my password option when you map the network drive.
You log off the computer. After you log on again, you double-click the network drive and then enter the credentials to reconnect to the drive.
After you restart Windows Explorer, the problem does not occur.
This problem occurs because of an error in the Shell32.dll file. When the mapped network drive connects to the computer, the Shell32.dll file updates the network drive icon only in the details pane of Windows Explorer. An event is not generated to change the icon in the Folders area.

Hotfix replacement information
This hotfix does not replace any other hotfixes.
The English version of this hotfix has the file attributes (or later file attributes) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time item in Control Panel.
This hotfix updates the Shell32.dll file to generate an icon change notification. After you apply this hotfix, the main drive icon in the details pane of Windows Explorer is updated. The Windows Explorer Folders pane icon is also updated correctly.
To work around this problem, restart Windows Explorer.
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section. This problem was first corrected in Windows Vista Service Pack 1.
