The text of the e-mail message may be corrupted when Exchange 2007 receives an e-mail message that does not specify character set information

This article has been archived. It is offered "as is" and will no longer be updated.
SYMPTOMS
When Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 receives an e-mail message that does not specify character set information, the text of the e-mail message may be corrupted.
CAUSE
This problem may occur because Exchange 2007 does not detect the character set in which the e-mail message is encoded.

The message is decoded by using the character set that is specified in the remote domain settings. If the character set in which the message text is encoded differs from the character set that is specified in the remote domain settings, the message text is corrupted.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, install Exchange 2007 Service Pack 1. For more information, visit the following Microsoft Download Center Web site:
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
