Error message when you try to open the My Documents folder on a Windows XP-based computer after you resume the computer from hibernation: "You might not have permission to use this network resource"

Support for Windows XP has ended

Microsoft ended support for Windows XP on April 8, 2014. This change has affected your software updates and security options. Learn what this means for you and how to stay protected.

Consider the following scenario:
  • In an Active Directory domain, you set up a Distributed File System (DFS) share on a domain controller. This DFS share is fault-tolerant and domain-based.
  • You use Group Policy settings to redirect the My Documents folders of the users in the domain to this DFS share.
  • You make the My Documents folders on the client computers available offline.
  • You log on to the domain through a Windows XP-based client computer that has network connectivity.
  • You suspend (S3) or hibernate (S4) the client computer.

    Note When the client computer is suspended or hibernated, connectivity to the Internet continues. However, the connection to the domain controller is discontinued.
After you resume the client computer in this scenario, you cannot open the My Documents folder. Additionally, you receive the following error message:
\\domain_name\DFSRoot\Share\Username\My Documents is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.

Configuration information could not be read from the domain controller, either because the machine is unavailable, or access has been denied.
This issue occurs if the following conditions are true:
  • No drive is mapped to the DFS share that is being used for redirection of the My Documents folder.
  • The DFS Partition Knowledge Table (PKT) is flushed after the client computer resumes from hibernation.
After the issue occurs, you must restart the client computer.

If there are many domain controllers in the domain, and if many mapped drives are set up, you may experience a long delay when you start Windows Explorer. To work around this delay, flush the PKT cache. To do this, use the Dfsutil.exe utility together with the /pktflush parameter.
