Redundant Prf<x>.tmp files are generated after a user who uses roaming user profile logs off from a Windows Vista-based client computer

Consider the following scenario:
  • In an Active Directory domain environment, you configure users in the domain to use a roaming user profile.
  • You enable the Process even if the Group Policy objects have not changed option for some Group Policy objects in the domain.
  • The user profile on the profile server contains read-only files.
In this scenario, when a domain user logs off from a Windows Vista-based client computer, some redundant files that are named Prfx.tmp may be generated in the user profile folder on the profile server.
During the logoff process, the client computer synchronizes the local user profile with the profile on the profile server. If the profile engine detects that a file in the profile on the profile server is older than the corresponding file in the user profile on the client computer, the profile server performs the following actions:
  1. It renames the file on the profile server to Prfx.tmp.
  2. It tries to copy the latest file on the client computer to the profile server.
  3. If step 2 is successful, it calls the DeleteFile API to delete the Prfx.tmp file.
However, if file is a read-only file, the corresponding Prfx.tmp file is also a read-only file. Therefore, the DeleteFile API cannot delete this Prfx.tmp file.
