INTRODUCTION
This article describes how to restore files from a backup in Windows Live OneCare.
More information
Consider one of the following scenarios:
  • Your computer experiences a hardware failure.
  • Some files that you need were deleted from your computer.
In these scenarios, you can restore the files to the computer from an earlier backup, if you backed up the files.

If you use a hub PC, you can restore backup files from any computer in your OneCare circle. You can select the files to restore and the backup from which to restore the files.

Notes
  • OneCare circle: A OneCare circle is a small network of computers that share the same Windows Live OneCare subscription.
  • Hub PC: A hub PC is a computer from which you can monitor or manage other computers in your OneCare circle.
To restore all files from a back up, follow these steps:
  1. Start Windows Live OneCare.
  2. In the Backup and Restore area, click Restore files.
  3. Click Restore files from a local backup.
  4. Click Express Restore, click Restore files, and then click Finish.
To select specific files to restore or to select a specific backup from which to restore files, follow these steps:
  1. Start Windows Live OneCare.
  2. In the Backup and Restore area, click Restore files.
  3. Click Restore files from a local backup, and then click Custom Restore.
  4. To restore files from the most recent back up of your computer, click Restore files from the current backup on this computer.

    To restore files that were backed up from another computer, follow these steps:
    1. Click Restore files from backup of another machine.
    2. Click the backup from which you want to restore the files.
    To restore files from an earlier backup, follow these steps:
    1. Click Restore files from an earlier backup or a backup from another computer.
    2. Click the location of the backup device, and then click Next.
    3. Click the backup from which you want to restore the files.
  5. To restore all files that are no longer present on the computer, click Restore all missing files.

    To restore specific types of files, follow these steps:
    1. Click Restore files by file type.
    2. Click to select the check boxes next to the types of files that you want to restore, and then click Next.
    3. Click to select the check boxes next to the files that you want to restore, and then click Next.
    4. Decide whether you want to restore the files that have the same names as the files that are already stored on the computer, click the appropriate option, and then click Next.
    To select specific files that you want to restore, follow these steps:
    1. Click Search for files to restore.
    2. In the search box, type all or part of the file name for the file that you want to restore, and then click Next.
    3. Click to select the check boxes next to the files that you want to restore, and then click Next.
    4. Decide whether you want to restore files that have the same names as files that are already stored on the computer, click the appropriate option, and then click Next.
  6. Click Restore files, and then click Finish.
Note If Windows Live OneCare detects that there are no appropriate files to restore, the Restore files option is not available.
