Error message when you retrieve CRM schemas from a CRM 4.0 Web Service: "401 Unauthorized"

Consider the following scenario:
  1. You install the Microsoft BizTalk Server 2006 Adapter for Microsoft Dynamics CRM 3.0.
  2. You create a new BizTalk send port, and then you specify the URL of a Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0 Web service in the Transport properties of the send port.
  3. You try to retrieve CRM Schemas by using the new created send port.
In this scenario, you receive a "401 Unauthorized" error message.

Hotfix information for Microsoft BizTalk Server 2006 Adapter for Microsoft Dynamics CRM

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

Installation information

Install this hotfix on computers that are running Microsoft BizTalk Server 2006 Adapter for Microsoft Dynamics CRM.
  1. Extract and then install this hotfix on computers that are running the Microsoft BizTalk Server 2006 Adapter for Microsoft Dynamics CRM 3.0.
  2. After the hotfix has been installed, follow these steps:
    1. Create a folder in Windows Explorer named XSD in the directory where you installed the Microsoft Dynamics CRM Web site. For example, add the XSD folder to the drive:\Program Files\Microsoft Dynamics CRM\CRMWeb\Sdk directory.
    2. Copy the entity.aspx file that you extracted in step 1 to the XSD folder you created in step a.
    3. Restart iis by clicking Start, click Run, type iisreset, and then click OK.


You must have the Microsoft BizTalk Server 2006 Adapter for Microsoft Dynamics CRM installed to apply this hotfix.

Restart requirement

If you are prompted, restart the computer after you install the hotfix.
