The preboot execution environment (PXE) boot images do not appear in the SMSPXEIMAGES$ share in Systems Management Server 2003

SYMPTOMS
You use the Manage Distribution Points wizard to distribute a preboot execution environment (PXE) boot image in Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003. After you do this, the wizard indicates a successful operation. However, the boot images do not appear in the SMSPXEIMAGES$ share.

Additionally, the following error message may be logged in the Distmgr.log file:
Cannot access ["Display=\\server\SMSPXEIMAGES$\"]MSWNET:["SMS_SITE=site"]\\server\SMSPXEIMAGES$\ SMS_DISTRIBUTION_MANAGER 9/4/2007 8:05:42 AM 2168 (0x0878)
This problem occurs when the PXE Service Point is reinstalled by using the following procedure:
  1. The PXE Service Point is uninstalled.
  2. The original SMSPXEIMAGES$ share is manually removed.

Note This share is not removed by default.
  3. The PXE Service Point is reinstalled on the same computer by using a drive letter that differs from the drive letter of the original installation. For example, the original installation was put on the C drive, and the reinstallation was put on the D drive.
CAUSE
This problem occurs because the reinstalled PXE Service Point incorrectly locates the boot images in the old path by using the old drive letter.

The original SMSPXEIMAGES$ share was removed, and the new installation does not create a new SMSPXEIMAGES$ share that uses the new drive letter. Therefore, the boot images are no longer available on the network.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, re-create the SMSPXEIMAGES$ share by using the new drive letter and path, and then redistribute the images from the old drive.

For example, the share is in the following location:
C:\ \RemoteInstall\SMSImages\SMSPKG
Change this to the following new location:
D:\RemoteInstall\SMSImages\SMSPKG
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
