Users who have sufficient instance rights cannot delete a collection in System Center Configuration Manager 2007

This article has been archived. It is offered "as is" and will no longer be updated.
SYMPTOMS
Consider the following scenario:
  • In Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager 2007, a user has all instance rights to a collection.
  • This user does not have the read class right to the collection.
  • This user tries to delete the collection in the Configuration Manager console.
In this scenario, the deletion operation fails, and the user receives the following error message:
Delete Confirmation
The ConfigMgr Provider reported an error.
If the user clicks Details, the user receives the following error message:
ConfigMgr Error object:
instance of SMS_ExtendedStatus
{
CauseInfo = "11";
Description = "EnumCollections failed";
ErrorCode = 2168589573;
File = "e:\\nts_sms_fre\\sms\\siteserver\\sdk_provider\\smsprov\\sspcollection.cpp";
Line = 4055;
Operation = "ExecQuery";
ParameterInfo = "Select * From SMS_CollectToSubCollect_a Where subCollection='SMS_Collection.CollectionID=\"SC10000D\"'";
ProviderName = "WinMgmt"
SQLMessage = "[42000][205][Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]All queries combined using a UNION, INTERSECT or EXCEPT operator must have an equal number of expressions in their target lists.";
SQLSeverity = 16;
SQLStatus = 205;
StatusCode = 2147749889;
};
Additionally, an error message is logged into the Smsprov.log file on the server that hosts the collection. The error message resembles the following:
SQL Error: [42000][205][Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]All queries combined using a UNION, INTERSECT or EXCEPT operator must have an equal number of expressions in their target lists.
CAUSE
System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM) tries to execute an invalid SQL query when a user who does not have class rights tries to delete a collection.
