You cannot use the SetFocus() function to retain focus in a field in Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0

SYMPTOMS
When you try to retain focus in a CRM form field in Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0 by using the SetFocus() function from the Microsoft Dynamics CRM Software Development Kit (SDK), the focus to the field is lost.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, follow these steps:
  1. Apply the latest cumulative update rollup for Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0.For more information about the rollup, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
    949256 Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0 updates and hotfixes
  2. Add the following code after the SetFocus() function:
    event.returnValue=false;
    For example, add the code as follows:
    crmForm.all.fieldname.SetFocus();event.returnValue=false; // Add this line
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
