Symptoms

Consider the following scenario. You connect a Microsoft Bluetooth mouse or a Microsoft Bluetooth keyboard. The mouse or the keyboard uses the "First connect" technology. Then, you install the IntelliPoint or IntelliType Pro setup software.

During the installation process, the Connect your mouse and keyboard dialog box appears. You follow the steps in the dialog box to start the connection with the mouse or with the keyboard, and then you click Next. The setup software tries to put the Bluetooth transceiver into a software-managed Bluetooth mode, and then it tries to connect to the mouse or to the keyboard through a Bluetooth connection.

In this scenario, the connection fails, and the Connect your mouse and keyboard dialog box appears again. If you try to connect either the mouse or the keyboard again, the connection fails again.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, you must change the transceiver to use a hardware-managed Bluetooth mode. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Click Cancel to close the Connect your mouse and keyboard dialog box.

  2. Click Yes.

  3. Open the Mouse or Keyboard item in Control Panel. To do this, follow these steps:

    • For the Mouse item:

      1. Click Start, and then click Run.

      2. In the Open box, type Control Mouse, and then press ENTER.

    • For the Keyboard item:

      1. Click Start, and then click Run.

      2. In the Open box, type Control Keyboard, and then press ENTER.

  4. Click the Wireless tab, and then click Advanced.

  5. Click to select the Hardware-Managed Bluetooth Mode check box.

  6. Click OK. You receive the following message:

For this change to take effect, you must unplug and replug the Microsoft Bluetooth transceiver.

To return to software-managed mode, return to this dialog, or press the button on the Microsoft Bluetooth transceiver for five seconds.

  7. Unplug the Bluetooth transceiver, and then plug the transceiver back in to the computer. The transceiver is now in hardware-managed Bluetooth mode.

  8. In the notification area, right-click the Bluetooth icon, and then click Open Bluetooth Settings.

  9. Click the Devices tab, and then click Add.

  10. On the bottom of the Bluetooth mouse or keyboard, press and hold the Connect button for 5 seconds.

Note The Connect button may have a Bluetooth symbol next to it.

  11. Click to select the My device is set up and ready to be found check box, and then click Next.

  12. If the device is not listed, repeat steps 9 to 11.

If the device is listed, select the device, and then click Next. Follow these steps for the device that you are trying to add:

    • For the Bluetooth mouse:

      1. Click Don't use a passkey, and then click Next.

      2. Click Finish.

    • For the Bluetooth keyboard:

      1. Click Choose a passkey for me, and then click Next.

      2. A string of numbers is displayed for the passkey. In the Passkey box, type these numbers, and then press ENTER.

      3. Click Finish.
