INTRODUCTION
This article discusses the retry logic that Microsoft Office Communicator 2007 uses to download address book files. After you install the Communicator 2007 update package that is dated October 24, 2008, this retry logic changes.
MORE INFORMATION
The Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007 Address Book server contains the following set of address book files that Communicator 2007 can download:
  • A full file that contains all contacts.
  • Delta files that contain the changes from the current full file and from each previous full file.
Note The following scenarios assume that Communicator 2007 is not forced to download the full address book file. In some scenarios, Communicator 2007 is forced to download the full address book file when the MaxDeltaFileSizePercentage value is reached.

Communicator 2007 tries to download address book files from Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007 in the following order:
  1. The delta file from the current day.
  2. The full file from the current day.
  3. The delta file from the previous day.
  4. The full file from the previous day.
Communicator 2007 repeats this pattern until it can access one of these files. That is, it tries to download the delta file for the current day, and then it tries to download the full file for the current day. If it cannot download those files, it tries to download the files for each previous day. For example, Communicator 2007 tries to access the delta file from three days ago. If it cannot do this, it tries to access the full file from three days ago. Then, it tries to access the files from four days ago, and so on. This pattern is repeated until Communicator 2007 can access either a delta file or a full file.

After you install the Communicator 2007 update package that is dated July 15, 2008, Communicator 2007 tries to download address book files from Communications Server 2007 in the following order:
  1. The delta file from the current day.
  2. The delta file from the previous day.
  3. The delta file from 2 days ago.
  4. The delta file from 3 days ago.
  5. The full file from the current day.
  6. The full file from the previous day.
  7. The full file from 2 days ago.
  8. The full file from 3 days ago. Communicator 2007 continues to try to download a full file until it can access a full file from X days ago.
