When you delete maintenance plans on a server instance that is restored from a SQL Server 2008 MSDB database backup, maintenance plans are deleted from the server instance on which the MSDB database was backed up

Extended support for SQL Server 2005 ends on April 12, 2016

If you are still running SQL Server 2005 after April 12, 2016, you will no longer receive security updates and technical support. We recommend upgrading to SQL Server 2014 and Azure SQL Database to achieve breakthrough performance, maintain security and compliance, and optimize your data platform infrastructure. Learn more about the options for upgrading from SQL Server 2005 to a supported version here.

Consider the following scenario:
  • You create an MSDB database backup from a server instance (Instance A) that is running in Microsoft SQL Server 2008 or Microsoft SQL Server 2005. The server instance also contains database maintenance plans.
  • You restore the MSDB database backup on a second server instance (Instance B).
  • You delete the maintenance plans from Instance B.
In this scenario, the maintenance plans are deleted from Instance A. To verify this, use Object Explorer to view the maintenance plans.
When you delete a maintenance plan from SQL Server, SQL Server Management Studio uses the connection information that is available in the maintenance plan of the SQL Server 2008 Integration Services (SSIS) package. In this scenario, this connection points to Instance A. Therefore, maintenance plans are deleted from Instance A.
