With the introduction of the SMS 2003 Inventory Tool for Dell Updates, managing hardware updates has become a key feature of Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003. As you design and implement a holistic methodology to manage software updates, you can also plan for hardware updates. Therefore, both functions are combined into a single update management process. Planning for hardware updates includes identifying categories of hardware updates. These categories are based on the kind of fix, the kind of updated feature, or the kind of product improvement that applies to your environment. When you plan for consolidation, it is important to select the appropriate hardware updates. This maintains a stable and reliable environment.
The SMS 2003 Inventory Tool for Dell Updates (ITDU) updates Dell servers that have the latest Dell BIOS, Dell firmware, and Dell drivers available. This tool uses the existing software update management feature of SMS 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1) to help automate the update process for your Dell system. Additionally, you must limit the number and scope of the Dell Update packages to transport them over the network.
You can use the SMS 2003 Inventory Tool for Dell Updates to more effectively update your Dell server hardware components and to increase the overall performance levels at which your Dell servers operate. For example, each Dell Component Update that is configured contains pertinent information about the different kinds of available hardware updates (BIOS, drivers, and firmware) and about the Dell server models requiring the updates.
