Error 0x800B0100 when you try to install Windows Updates or Microsoft Updates

Summary
When you try to install the latest updates from Windows Updates or Microsoft Updates, you may receive the following error message:
Error(s) found:

Code 800B0100 Windows Update encountered an unknown error.


This issue may occur if a file needed by Windows Update is corrupted or missing.

Step 1: Run the Windows Update Troubleshooter

Click the following link to download and save the troubleshooter, and then click Open to run.

Step 2: Use System File Checker to repair damaged Windows files

If the problem continues, use the System File Checker tool to repair damaged Windows files. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Open an elevated command prompt.
  2. Run the "sfc /scannow" command.
  3. Try to install update again.

Step 3: Run the DISM tool

If the problem continues, use the Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) tool to fix Windows Update corruption errors. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Open an elevated command prompt.
  2. Run the "DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth" command.
    Important When you run this command, DISM uses Windows Update to provide the files that are required to fix corruptions. However, if your Windows Update client is already broken, use a running Windows installation as the repair source, or use a Windows side-by-side folder from a network share or from a removable media, such as the Windows DVD, as the source of the files. To do this, run the following command instead:
    DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:\RepairSource\Windows /LimitAccess
    Note Replace the C:\RepairSource\Windows placeholder with the location of your repair source. For more information about using the DISM tool to repair Windows, see Repair a Windows Image.

To resolve this error in Windows XP, run the Windows Update troubleshooter below, and then run Windows Update again. To start the troubleshooter, click run now:

Note This troubleshooter only applies to Windows Vista and Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3). If your computer is running Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2), Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP1), or Windows XP, run the Fix it solution below, and then run Windows Update again.


If the Windows Update troubleshooter or Fix it can't resolve your problem, manually register the Softpub.dll, Wintrust.dll, Initpki.dll, and Mssip32.dll files to resolve the problem. To do this, follow these steps:
Note You must be logged on as an administrator to perform these steps.
  1. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
  2. At the command prompt, type regsvr32 Softpub.dll /s, and then press ENTER.
  3. At the command prompt, type regsvr32 Wintrust.dll /s, and then press ENTER.
  4. At the command prompt, type regsvr32 Initpki.dll /s, and then press ENTER.
  5. At the command prompt, type regsvr32 Mssip32.dll /s, and then press ENTER.
