Error message when you try to connect to the Windows Update or Microsoft Update Web site: "0x80240030"

SYMPTOMS
When you try to connect to the Windows Update or Microsoft Update Web site, you may receive the following error message:
0x80240030
CAUSE
This issue may occur if your proxy or firewall settings are configured incorrectly. In this case, the connection from the client computer to the Windows Update servers fails.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, use the following methods in the order in which they are presented.

Method 1: Remove characters from the proxy exception list, and then clear the proxy cache

Follow these steps, as appropriate for the operating system that you are running.

Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, and Windows 2000

  1. Click Start, click Run, type notepad, and then click OK, or press ENTER.
  2. Copy the following commands, and then paste them into the opened Notepad window:
    proxycfg -dnet stop wuauservnet start wuauserv
  3. On the File menu, click Save As, and then type fixproxy.bat.
  4. Click Save as type, and then select All Files.
  5. Save the fixproxy.bat file to your desktop.
  6. Double-click the fixproxy.bat file to register the Windows Update files
  7. Try to install updates again
Note When the updates are installed successfully, you can safely delete the fixproxy.bat file. If these steps did not resolve your issue, go to Method 2.

Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008

  1. Click StartStart button, and then type notepad in the Start search text box.
  2. Click Notepad in the Programs list.
  3. Copy the following commands, and then paste them into the opened Notepad window:
    proxycfg -dnet stop wuauservnet start wuauserv
  4. Click File, click Save As, and then type fixproxy.bat.
  5. Click Save as type, and then select All Files (*.*).
  6. Save the fixproxy.bat file to your desktop.
  7. Right-click the fixproxy.bat file, and then click Run as administrator.

    User Account Control				permission If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.
  8. Try to install updates again.
Note When the updates are installed successfully, you can safely delete the fixproxy.bat file.

Method 2: Enable the "Automatically detect settings" option in Internet Explorer

Note Use this method if your operating system is Windows 2000, Windows XP, or Windows Server 2003.
  1. Start Windows Internet Explorer.
  2. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.

    Note If the Internet Explorer Tools menu is unavailable in Internet Explorer, press the ALT key to display the menu.
  3. Click the Connections tab, and then click LAN Settings.
  4. Click to select the Automatically detect settings check box, and then click OK.
  5. Try to install updates again.
