Support for Windows XP has ended

Microsoft ended support for Windows XP on April 8, 2014. This change has affected your software updates and security options. Learn what this means for you and how to stay protected.

When you restart a Windows XP-based computer, you may receive one of the following Stop error messages:
  • Stop 0x00000050 (parameter1, 00000000, parameter3, 0x00000000)
  • Stop 0x0000008E (0xc0000005, parameter2, parameter3, 0x00000000)
This problem occurs occasionally. Therefore, it is more likely to occur during a reboot cycling test.

  • The parameters in these Stop error messages may vary, depending on the actual configuration.
  • The symptoms of a Stop error may vary, depending on your computer's system failure options.
To resolve this problem, apply the following updates in the order in which they are presented:
  • 954211 MS08-061: Vulnerabilities in Windows kernel could allow elevation of privilege
  • 959252 Error message when you switch the operating system from a dual monitor setting to a single monitor setting on a Windows XP-based computer or on a Windows Server 2003-based computer that has the security update 954211 installed: "Stop 0x0000008E"
Note Update 959252 addresses a known issue that was introduced by update 954211.
