Consider the following scenario. You install or upgrade to Vista SP1 on a system with an HD Audio card. You open Sound from Control Panel, and click on any Playback or Recording device listed. You then click the Properties button, and navigate to the Levels tab.
The Levels tab is blank and has no volume adjustment controls for audio device types that do not support Jack Detection (such as CD, AUX, and Stereo Mix).
To work around this issue, right click any of the affected devices in the Sound configuration window, and choose Enable. Then, close and reopen the Sound configuration window.
If a device is not listed, you must first Right click on any device in the Sound configuration window, and choose "Show Disabled Devices."
This only applies to audio input or output devices that are of a type that do not support Jack Detection, such as CD, AUX, and Stereo Mix.
