FIX: The Inetinfo.exe process terminates unexpectedly under high stress when IIS hosts many application pools

When Internet Information Server (IIS) 6.0 hosts many application pools, the Inetinfo.exe process terminates unexpectedly under high stress. When this problem occurs, you receive an error message that resembles one of the following messages in the event log:

Message 1

Event Source: W3SVC-WP
Event ID: 2273
Description: Worker process could not access metabase due to disconnection error. Marking process as unhealthy.

Message 2

Event Source: Application Error
Event ID: 1000
Description: Faulting application inetinfo.exe, version 6.0.3790.1830, faulting module coadmin.dll, version 6.0.3790.1830, fault address 0x00007705.

Message 3

Event Source: Service Control Manager
Event ID: 7031
Description: The IIS Admin Service service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 26 time(s). The following corrective action will be taken in 1 milliseconds: Run the configured recovery program.

This problem occurs because of an issue in the Coadmin.dll file. The cleanup code for the initialization of IIS configuration metadata is not thread safe. Therefore, the Web server can encounter a race condition under heavy stress. The race condition causes heap corruption in the Inetinfo.exe process.

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.
