More Information

In order for a Windows Server 2008 DHCP server using an IPv6 scope to register on behalf of a client with DNS, there are two options that need to be configured (either at the scope or server level).

1.       Option 23 - DNS Recursive Name Server IPV6 Address List

2.       Option 24 - Domain Search List

If these options are not configured, you may find that even when a client requests the server register on its behalf, that registration never occurs.  Viewing the requests in a network trace will show in the final packet of the DHCP exchange that the server overrides the client request for registration.

Example:

Client flag values:

    - Flag: 1 (0x1)

       MBZ: (00000...) 0

N:   (.....0..) DHCPServer SHOULD perform updates (the PTR RR and possibly the AAAA RR based on the 'S' bit)

O:   (......0.) the server has not overridden the client's preference for the 'S' bit

S:   (.......1) SHOULD perform the AAAA RR (FQDN to address) DNS updates

Server response:

    - Flag: 6 (0x6)

       MBZ: (00000...) 0

N:   (.....1..) DHCPServer SHOULD NOT perform the any DNS updates

O:   (......1.) the server has overridden the client's preference for the 'S' bit

S:   (.......0) SHOULD NOT perform the AAAA RR (FQDN to address) DNS updates
